At one point in our lives, most of us have probably felt it. We want to do something new with our careers but, to do that, we need to first have experience. But how do you get experience if you can’t do it in the first place?!

Work Pairing, a scheme run by Jessica Tyrrell, in conjunction with Bracknell Forest Council, aims to break the cycle of “no work experience – no work” for the 16 to 18 year-olds of Bracknell. These young people are carefully matched to a local employer who specialises in the area of work that they’re interested in. They join this employer for a work placement lasting for three months, two days a week, with a further day each week spent improving their maths, English and general employ-ability skills in a very functional way that is immediately applicable to the world of work.

What do the employer and the young person get out of this? Well, the employer gets an enthusiastic pair of hands for three months, totally free of charge (the young person does get paid, but by Bracknell Forest Council itself) and a chance to give someone a much needed leg-up at the start of their career. The young person gets a better understanding of their future career, and vitally, some experience to put on their CV.

It was really good fun making this video and it was great to be a part of something that takes a new approach to getting people into work. It’s not just about shoveling them into any old job, but finding out what they want to do and helping them to get there. We filmed it over a couple of days with no script whatsoever; we just chatted to the guys and let whatever they said form the storyline of the film.
